Free Crochet Heart Pillow Pattern: Notes

Skill level: intermediate crochet skills and knowledge

Terminology: US crochet terminology

Finished size: height – 24cm (9.5″), width – 28cm (11″) when using a 4mm = G/6 hook and Bulky #5 = Chunky yarn

Gauge (4″ x 4″): 16 rounds x 16 stitches

Note: this pattern is worked in continous rounds, which means you will not slip stitch at the end of each round. Instead you will continue to crochet the next round in the next stitch.

Free Crochet Heart Pillow Pattern: Materials & Tools

I recommend using a velvet yarn for extra soft plush feel. But you can also use 100% acrylic or a blend of acrylic yarn and wool.

I also recommend using this yarn weight: Bulky Weight Yarn #5 = Chunky. But the pattern will also work with Super Bulky #6 = Super Chunky such as blanket yarn.

I used:

– Bulky #5 = Chunky

– 100% polyester

– 1x ball of red yarn for one heart – James C. Brett Flutterby Chunky – colour B31 – (100g/175m)

– 1x ball of pink yarn for the other heart – James C. Brett Flutterby Chunky – colour B47 – (100g/175m)

– one ball is just about enough to crochet the heart so keep your tails short when starting the magic rings

Crochet hook size: I used 4 mm hook = G/6 but refer to the instructions on your yarn label if using different weight of yarn.

Tools used: scissors, tapestry needle, stitch marker, polyester stuffing

– Crochet the heart-shaped pillow in a continous round, do not slip stitch at the end of each round. Instead continue to crochet the next round in the next stitch.

– You will be using these basic stitches: the single crochet stitch (SC), single crochet increase (INC) and invisible single crochet decrease (INV DEC).

– I recommend using a longer piece of string as a running stitch marker so you can easily go back and count the number of rounds. Either way, a stitch marker is a must when working in continous rounds.

– If you are struggling to see the stitches when working with the velvet/baby yarn then you can double the yarn with a thinner yarn such as Superfine #1 = 3ply. This will make the stitches more visible.

How to Achieve the Shape of the Heart

To achieve the heart shape, you will first crochet 2 separate circles (heart tops) that will form the top of the heart first. Then you will join these two circles together and continue to crochet the bottom of the heart.

Free Crochet Heart Pillow Pattern: Top Part

Crochet two separate circles (cups) using the bellow pattern – R1 to R15:

R1: MR – 6 x SC into the ring {6} – watch this step by step video tutorial on How to crochet a magic ring

If you have a struggle closing the magic ring when using the velvet yarn, then you can do this instead of using MR: create a slip knot on your hook, CH3, SS into 1st CH to create a circle and 6x SC into the circle

R2: INC in each ST around {12}

R3: (SC in next ST, INC) x 6 {18}

R4: SC in next ST, INC, (SC in next 2 ST, INC) x 5, SC in next ST {24}

R5: (SC in next 3 ST, INC) x 6 {30}

R6: SC in next 2 ST, INC, (SC in next 4 ST, INC) x 5, SC in next 2 ST {36}

R7: (SC in next 5 ST, INC) x 6 {42}

R8: SC in next 3 ST, INC, (SC in next 6 ST, INC) x 5, SC in next 3 ST {48}

R9: (SC in next 7 ST, INC) x 6 {54}

R10: SC in next 4 ST, INC, (SC in next 8 ST, INC) x 5, SC in next 4 ST {60}

R11: (SC in next 9 ST, INC) x 6 {66}

R12: SC in next 5 ST, INC, (SC in next 10 ST, INC) x 5, SC in next 5 ST {72}

R13-R15 (3 rounds): SC in each ST around {72}

First circle (cup) – FO after R15 and cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing; insert a stitch marker into the first SC ST of R15

Second circle (cup) – don’t FO and don’t cut the yarn off; insert a stitch marker into ST38 of R15; leave your hook in and join the two circles together as per the instructions below

How to Join the Two Circles (Cups) Together

R16: continue from where you finished with R15 in the second circle:

– SC in next 37 ST in the second circle

– insert your hook into the first circle – into the stitch with the stitch marker in it – and SC (Pic 1 & 2)

– SC in next 71 ST in the first circle (Pic 3)

– insert your hook back into the second circle – into the stitch with the stitch marker in it – and SC (Pic 4 & 5)

– SC in next 34 ST (Pic 6) {144}

– you have now joined the two circles together and will continue to crochet the heart in a continuous round – dont worry about the little gap in between the circles, you will close it at a later stage

R17: 1x INV DEC, SC in next 33 ST, 2x INV DEC, SC in next 33 ST, 1x INV DEC, SC in next 33 ST, 2x INV DEC, SC in next 33 ST {138} – watch this step by step video tutorial on How to crochet an invisible decrease

R18: SC in next 33 ST, 2x INV DEC, SC in next 65 ST, 2x INV DEC, SC in next 32 ST {134} (Pic 7)

You can now close the gap in between the two circles:

– thread a yarn needle with the yarn tail you have left after you completed the first circle

– close the gap with a few stitches on the wrong side (on the inside); stitches don’t need to be too neat as the velvet yarn is very forgiving and you won’t really see the stitches anyway. Weave the yarn tail in.
