Crochet Twist Headband Pattern – Before You Get Started
Pattern Notes
Skill level: begginer crochet skills and knowledge
Terminology: US crochet terminology
Gauge swatch (2″ x 2″): 10 stitches x 15 worked rows
Sizing
The below sizing is based on the use of Light Worsted #3 = DK and 4 mm crochet hook = G/6
Woman Small (WS): head circumference – 53.5cm (21″) | Finished length – 47cm (18.5″) | Chain 94 as a foundation chain
Woman Medium (WM): head circumference – 56cm (22″) | Finished length – 49.5cm (19.5″) | Chain 99 as a foundation chain
Woman Large (WL): head circumference – 58.5cm (23″) | Finished length – 52cm (20.5″) | Chain 104 as a foundation chain
Width: 8.5cm (3.25″)
How to customise the length:
– measure the head circumference and deduct about 6cm (2.5″) – the finished size needs to be smaller than the head circumference to allow for the headband stretching
– now chain the required number of chains as your foundation chain allowing 5 chains per each 2.5cm (1″)
How to customise the width by adjusting the number of rows:
– crochet less rows if you would like your headband to be narrower
– crochet more rows if you would like your headband to be wider
Note: the finished size may differ to the above size guide due to brand/type of yarn and tension used
Materials and Tools Needed
Yarn:
– this pattern will work nicely with 100% acrylic yarn or a blend of acrylic and wool
– recommended yarn weight: Light Worsted #3 = DK weight yarn but the pattern will also work with Medium #4 = Worsted weight yarn if you would like to make a warmer headband
I used:
– Light Worsted #3 = DK
– 72% acrylic, 25% wool, 3% viscose
– 1x ball of Life Tweed DK by Stylecraft yarn – Duck Egg Nepp 2298 – (100g/298m)
– weight/yardage to make one headband: 35g / 86m
Crochet hook size: I used 4 mm hook = G/6 hook but refer to the instructions on your yarn label if using different weight of yarn
Tools used: scissors, tapestry needle, tape measure, ‘handmade’ label (optional)

Crochet Twist Headband Pattern – Step by Step Instructions
You will crochet the twisted ear warmers using the single crochet ribbing stitch pattern, which means you will work single crochet stitches into the back loop of each stitch apart from the first and the last stitch in each row, where you will crochet into the whole loop. This is a double sided stitch so your work will look identical on both sides.
Watch this video tutorial that will show you step by step how to crochet the single crochet ribbing stitch, how to change colors and how to count rows when working on a project using this crochet stitch. Written Pattern
FCH:
Chain 94 for WS, 99 for WM, 104 for WL or customise as per the size guide at the top of this page
R1:
SC in back bumps across starting from 2nd CH from the hook; CH1 and TO {93, 98, 103 excl the turning chain}
R2:
– SC in the whole loop of the second CH from the hook (Pic 1)
– SC into BLO across in the next 91, 96, 101 stitches:
– SC into BLO = insert hook into the back loop only (Pic 2), yarn over and pull through the stitch – you will have two loops on the hook (Pic 3), yarn over and pull through remaining two loops on the hook (Pic 4)
– that’s your first SC into BLO completed
– repeat SC into BLO for the next 90, 95, 100 stitches
– SC in the whole loop of the last ST, watch out as the last stich can be easily overlooked
– CH1 and TO {93, 98, 103 excl the turning chain}
– note: when working on a project using the single crochet ribbing stitch, the edges tend to stretch a bit more than the middle of your work. This is why you will work SC into the whole loop of the first and last stitch in each row. This helps to keep the edges a bit tighter.
R3:
– SC in the whole loop of the 2nd chain from the hook
– SC into BLO across in the next 91, 96, 101 stitches
– SC in the whole loop of the last ST
– CH1 and TO {93, 98, 103 excl the turning chain}
R4 onwards:
– repeat row R3 until you have achieved the desired width of your twist headband
– my headband is 8.5 cm (3.25″) wide which equals to 24 worked rows
Step by Step Video Tutorial
Watch this stitch tutorial to learn how to make single crochet ribbing. Plus I will show you a tip how to keep the edges tighter.
Last row:
– SC in the whole loop of the 2nd chain from the hook
– SC into BLO across in the next 91, 96, 101 stitches
– SC in the whole loop of the last ST {93, 98, 103}
– FO and cut the yarn off while leaving a long tail for sewing
How to Sew the Headband Together to Create the Twist
– lay the headband flat and fold it up so the short sides meet in the middle (Pic 5)
– fold each short side of the band in half (Pic 6)
– slide the folded up sides into each other so they interlock (Pic 7)
– you will have four edges lined up and you need to sew them together using the long yarn tail stitch by stitch (Pic 8)
– once you have sewed the four edges across, turn the headband right side out and try it on to test the size before you FO and weave the yarn ends in
– you should be left with a neat looking twist
– attach the ‘handmade’ label and you are done! ๐
How to Change Colors When Working on Your Crochet Twist Headband Pattern
If you would like to use different colors and create a stripy headband you can follow the steps below:
– SC across the row using one color
– when working on the last SC at the end of the row: insert hook into the back loop of the last stitch; yarn over; pull through the stitch, then yarn over with new color and pull it through the two loops on the hook
– then CH1 using new color and TO
– when working on the first and last SC in the next row, SC into back loop only instead of the whole loop
– continue to crochet as per row R3
