Crochet Cowl Pattern – Before You Get Started
Pattern Notes
Skill level: easy pattern suitable for a beginner crocheter
Terminology: US crochet terminology
Finished size and gauge based on: the use of 10 mm crochet hook = N/P15 and Super Bulky/ Super Chunky #6 yarn
Width: 33 cm / 14″
Length: 27 cm / 10.5″
Gauge (4″ x 4″): 4 clusters (cluster = SC and DC in the same stitch) x 7 rows
Sizing
You can easily customise the size of your crochet cowls by chaining more or less stitches in the foundation chain or by crocheting more or less rows.
The below is based on the use of 10mm = N/P15 crochet hook and Super Bulky/ Super Chunky #6 yarn.
Customise the cowl width:
- for wider cowl add more chains in the foundation chain
- for narrower cowl reduce the number of chains in the foundation chain
- 2 chains = 2.5 cm / 1″
Customise the cowl length:
- for longer cowl add more rows
- for shorter cowl reduce the number of rows
- 2 rows = 3 cm / 1.25″
Please note the gauge and sizing may vary depending on the brand of yarn you are using and your tension.

Crochet Cowl Pattern – Step by Step Instructions
Construction
– the cowl is worked from the bottom up in a continuous round to avoid a visible seam
– there is no need for sewing apart from weaving the yarn ends in
– you will begin with a foundation chain that you will join together to create a loop
– you will then crochet one round of single crochet stitches into the foundation chain
– from there onwards you will continue to crochet the main body of the cowl using the Suzette stitch
– Suzette stitch is a very simple stitch that consists of two basic crochet stitches – single crochet stitches and double crochet stitches. It creates a beautiful texture on both sides of your crochet project.
– you will complete the cowl by crocheting a round of single crochet stitches.

Written Pattern
FCH: Chain 50 – make your chain very lose otherwise it will be tighter than the rest of your work. You can also use a 11mm crochet hook just for the chain.
R1: SC into the back bump (third loop) of the first CH to create a loop – be careful not to twist the chain, then continue to SC into the back bump of each chain all the way round {50}
R2: do not Sl ST (slip stitch) to close the round and instead continue to crochet in a continuous round, i.e. continue to crochet into the first stitch of R1
– SC in the first ST and then DC in the same ST
– skip a ST
– SC in the next ST and then DC in the same ST
– skip a ST
– SC in the next ST and then DC in the same ST
– continue to take turns between skipping a stitch and creating a cluster of SC and DC into the same ST all the way round {50}
R3 onwards: repeat round R2 until you have achieved the desired size
– my cowl is cca 27 cm (10.5″) long, which workes out as 19 rounds before you get to the last round (when using 10mm = N/P15 crochet hook and Super Bulky/ Super Chunky #6 yarn)
Last round:
– SC in each ST all the way round and finish off with INV FO
– watch this step by step video tutorial on How to crochet the invisible fasten off
– weave the yarn ends in and sew on the ‘handmade’ label (optional)
And you are done! ๐ I hope you had fun making this lovely chunky cowl.
