Quick and Easy Crochet Scrunchie: Free Pattern & Video Tutorial

This beautiful scrunchie is the perfect scrap yarn project for all crochet beginners out there! Plus it will make a great handmade gift for any girl who likes pretty things. Quick and Easy Crochet Scrunchie Free Pattern: Notes

Crochet terminology used: US crochet terminology

Skill level: beginner crochet skills and knowledge

Completed size: this will vary depending on the size of the hair tie used and yarn weight; my scrunchie is 9cm (3.5 inches) outside diameter

Language: only available in English

Quick and Easy Crochet Scrunchie Free Pattern: Materials & Tools

Type of yarn: this pattern will work nicely with 100% cotton yarn, 100% acrylic yarn or a blend. I recommend using this weight: Fine Sport #2 = 4 ply OR Light Worsted #3 = DK

I used:

– Fine Sport #2 = 4 ply / 55% cotton and 45% acrylic blend

– 1x skein of yarn – YarnArt Jeans – multicolour 80 – (50g/160m)

– 1x skein of yarn – YarnArt Jeans – dark purple colour 62 – (50g/160m)

– 1x skein of yarn – YarnArt Jeans – light purple colour 62 – (50g/160m)

Crochet hook size: I used 3 mm hook = C/2 but refer to the instructions on your yarn label if using different yarn.

Tools used: scissors, tapestry needle

Hair elastic band: you can use an elastic hair band of any size or thickness; I recommend choosing either a smaller and thicker hair tie that you wrap around your hair just once or a bigger but thinner hair tie that you can wrap around your hair multiple times. I used a smaller and thicker tie – 4.5cm (1.75 inches) outside diameter.

This simple crochet hair scrunchie pattern is written using US terms. Download this free printable chart with UK terms). You can print it and keep forever so you always have it to hand.

R: row or round

ST: stitch

CH: chain stitch – yarn over and pull through

SC: single crochet stitch – insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull through, you will now have two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook

DC: double crochet stitch – yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop so you now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

SS / SL ST: slip stitch – insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over pull through stitch and loop on the hook

FO: fasten off

{…}: number shown inside these brackets equals the number of total stitches at the end of each round

Quick and Easy Crochet Scrunchie Free Pattern: Get Started!

You will crochet the scrunchie using double crochet stitches in a circle around the hair tie. So when working on R1 you will insert the hook inside the tie and will crochet the stitches around it. But don’t worry, I will show you how in my video tutorial below. 🙂

Written Pattern

R1:

– create a slip knot on your crochet hook

– insert your hook inside the rubber band, yarn over and pull the yarn through the inside of the rubber band and SC

– SC all around the rubber band

– you may have gaps in between the stitches so make sure to push the stitches to the side so they are close to each other; you want the stitches to be very dense so you don’t have large gaps between them when you stretch the tie

– once your rubber band is completely covered by the stitches, SS into first ST of R1

– the total number of stitches in this round will vary depending on the size of your rubber band but make sure you have an even number of stitches (I had 60 STs in this round)

R2:

– CH 3x – this starting chain will count as your first DC in this round

– 2x DC into the ST at the base of the starting CH

– 2x DC in next ST, 3x DC in next ST and continue all the way round taking turns between 3x DC in one stitch and 2x DC in another stitch – you should end the round with 2x DC in the last stitch (do not crochet into the slip stitch)

– SS into the 3rd CH of the starting CH from this round

R3:

– CH 3x – this starting chain will count as your first DC in this round

– 2x DC into the ST at the base of the starting CH

– 3x DC in each ST all the way round

– SS into the 3rd CH of the starting CH from this round and FO

– cut the yarn off and weave the yarn tail in
