Free Crochet Laptop Case Pattern: Before You Get Started

Pattern Notes

Skill level: beginner crochet skills and knowledge

Terminology: US crochet terminology

Notes: only available in English

Sizing

The below sizing is based on the use of Bulky #5 = Chunky yarn and 6mm = J/10 crochet hook

Gauge (4″ x 4″): 14 stitches x 14 worked rows

How many chains to make in the foundation chain:

  • first make the chain long enough to match the width of your laptop
  • if using cotton yarn, add an extra inch to the length of the chain to allow for the thickness of the laptop
  • if using acrylic yarn, add only a ½ inch because acrylic yarn is more stretchy
  • make sure to test the size after you have completed a few rounds and adjust the size if necessary
  • t’s better to make the case slightly smaller than your laptop if you are after a snug fit. This will also allow for stretching of the yarn.
  • if your case is too loose it will slip off easily

How to customise the width:

  • reduce or increase the number of chains when working on the foundation chain
  • 2.5 cm (1″) = 3 to 4 chains in the foundation chain

How to customise the length:

  • reduce or increase the number of rounds
  • 2.5 cm (1″) = 3 to 4 rows

Note: the sizing may differ to the above due to brand or type of yarn used and your yarn tension

Yarn Requirements

Yarn:

  • this pattern will work nicely with 100% cotton, 100% acrylic, blend of acrylic and cotton or Chenille yarn
  • recommended yarn weight: Bulky #5 = Chunky yarn

I used 2 different colours to make a laptop case and an Ipad case:

  • Bulky #5 = Chunky yarn
  • 100% acrylic
  • Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky – Colour Rich Teal (64) – (100g/136m)
  • Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky – Colour Vintage Pink (355) – (100g/136m)
  • weight/yardage to make one case will depend on the size of your laptop. I used 135g (cc 184m/201yds) to make a case for my laptop which is 32.5cm by 22.5cm (13″ by 9″)

Free Crochet Laptop Case Pattern: Step by Step Instructions

You will start by crocheting a foundation chain and then will work around the chain in rounds so there will be no need to sew the bottom part of the laptop case together.

This pattern is using the mixed loop single crochet stitch which is a very simple technique using a standard single crochet stitch worked in front loop and then back loop in turns. This creates a beautiful uniform texture and pattern.

Written pattern

Please note that in the photos used in this pattern, I am making a smaller case but the technique and the steps are exactly the same. The only difference is the number of chains in the foundation chain. I am also using a cotton yarn so you can see the stitches better.

FCH: Chain required number of stitches based on the size of your laptop – refer to the size guide at the beginning of this pattern

R1:

– SC in back bump of each chain across starting from 2nd CH from the hook (Pic 1)

– then work on the opposite side of the chain and INC in first CH ST (Pic 2 & 3)

– SC in next 6 CH STs

– INC in next CH ST (we need an odd number of stitches in a round for this pattern to work, which is why we are increasing here)

– SC in next 7 CH STs

– INC in last CH ST (Pic 4)

R2:

– BLO SC in first ST of R1:

  • insert hook into the back loop of the 1st ST stitch of R1
  • yarn over and pull through the stitch, you will have 2 loops left on the hook
  • yarn over again and pull through 2 loops on the hook
  • mark the stitch you have just created with a stitch marker

– FLO SC in next ST:

  • insert your hook into the front loop of the next stitch
  • yarn over and pull through the stitch, you will have 2 loops left on the hook
  • yarn over again and pull through 2 loops on the hook

 – continue to SC in each ST in the round taking turns between BLO and FLO

 – your last SC in R2 should be worked into BLO

– don’t worry if your work is twisting at this stage, this is normal and your work will flatten out as you crochet along

R3:

– FLO SC in first ST of R2

– BLO SC in next ST

– continue to SC in each ST of the round taking turns between FLO and BLO

– your last ST in this round should be worked into FLO

R4 onwards:

– continue to SC in each stitch in the round taking turns between BLO and FLO

– if the last stitch in a round was worked into BLO, then you will start the next round with FLO and vice versa

Last round:

You will now crochet the edging at the top and the loops for the buttons – please note that in the photos below I am making only one loop for one button but you can make two or three loops. Again depending on the size of your laptop.

– first mark the stitches where you would like to make the loops. Make sure that the placement is symmetrical.

– SL ST into each stitch until you reach the place where you would like to make your first loop

– chain 20 STs, you may need to chain more or less depending on the size of the button you are using

– SL ST into the ST at the base of the chain (Pic 5 & 6)

– I recommend you test if your button fits into the loop before you continue with the next step

– continue to SL ST into each ST until you reach the place where you would like to make your second loop

– chain 20 STs, you may need to chain more or less depending on the size of the button you are using

– SL ST into the ST at the base of the chain

– continue to SL ST into each ST until you reach the end of the round

Join the round with invisible fasten off:

– watch this step by step video tutorial on How to crochet an invisible fasten off

– cut the yarn off and pull it out of the loop

– thread your tapestry needle with the yarn tail, skip one stitch and pull the needle through the next stitch

– insert the needle back into the stitch you came from but insert it from the top into the centre of the stitch

– pull on the yarn a bit and then weave the yarn tail in

And all there is left to do is to sew the buttons on and you are done! ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. I am already signed up for your email updates about free patterns or when your blog participates in a blog hop. That email is what landed me on the blog hop site, then here on your page to get my free download. Now that I’m here, I have to sign up for your email list again in order to get my free download. Why?

    1. Hi Nefertiti,

When we run crochet blog hops there are many designers participating in the event and all these designers promote the blog hop on their social media and with their subscribers too. This means that there will be a large number of crocheters who are not subscribed to my Newsletter as yet. Unfortunately it is not possible to set this up in such way so the system would recognise who is already subscribed and who is not. As a result of this, I have to ask everyone to sign up in order to receive the free download.

      Love,
      Petra x
