Crochet Star Blanket Free Pattern – Before You Get Started
Pattern Notes
Skill level: beginner pattern, easy for new crocheters
Finished size: 77.5 cm (30.5″) in diameter if using a 3 mm hook or C/2 hook and Superfine/Fingering yarn (#1 = 3 ply)
Terminology: US crochet terminology
Gauge (4″ x 4″): 22 DC stitches x 12 rows if using a 3 mm hook or C/2 hook and Superfine/Fingering yarn (#1 = 3 ply)
Notes: you can easily customise the size of this crochet star blanket by crocheting more or less rounds
Yarn Requirements
This crochet star blanket free pattern will work with the below yarns:
- Superfine/Fingering #1 = 3 ply
- Fine/Sport #2 = 4 ply
- Light Worsted #3 = DK
- Worsted #4 = Aran
- Bulky #5 = Chunky yarn
- 100% cotton
- 100% acrylic
- a blend of cotton/acrylic or cotton/bamboo

Crochet Star Blanket Free Pattern – Step by Step Instructions
Construction
- You will crochet the star crochet blanket in rounds starting from the middle until you have achieved the desired size.
- You will join each round by slip stitching into the top chain of the starting chain.
- You can easily adjust the size by crocheting less or more rounds.
- You will be using basic crochet stitches – single crochet and double crochet
- I have used yarn of different color for the pattern photos but you can follow the below guide on specific color changes.

Color changes
- cream (02) – R1 to R8 (8 rounds)
- baby pink (12) – R9 to R14 (6 rounds)
- light rose (11) – R15 to R20 (6 rounds)

- purple (14) – R27 to R32 (6 rounds)

Written Pattern
I have written the first few rounds without using abbreviations so it is easier for you to follow this star blanket crochet pattern.
I used different color yarn in the photos so it is easier for you to see the stitches. But you can follow the color changes guide above or just go for your own color combo. ๐
R1 – setup round (cream):
- magic ring – chain 3 – this is your starting chain – video tutorial on How to crochet a magic ring
- 11x double crochet into the ring
- slip stitch into 3rd chain of the starting chain
- at the end of the first round you will have a circle with 12 double crochet stitches (starting chain counts as a double crochet) (Pic 1)
- {12 including the slip stitch}
R2 (cream):
- chain 3 – this is your starting chain in this round
- 1x double crochet into the stitch your starting chain is coming from
- 2x double crochet into each of the next 11 stitches
- slip stitch into 3rd chain of the starting chain
- at the end of this round you will have a circle with 12 sets of 2x double crochet stitches (starting chain counts as a double crochet) (Pic 2)
- {24 including the slip stitch}

R3 (cream):
- chain 3 – this is your starting chain in this round
- (skip one stitch, 1x double crochet into next stitch (Pic 3), chain 2, 1x double crochet into the same stitch) x 11
- skip one stitch, 1x double crochet into next stitch (Pic 4), chain 2
- slip stitch into 3rd chain of the starting chain
- at the end of this round you will have a circle with 12 single shells (single shell = 1x double crochet, chain 2, 1x double crochet)
- {48 including the slip stitch}

R4 (cream):
- slip stitch into the first space, i.e. the first single shell (Pic 5)
- chain 3 – this will be your starting chain in this round
- 1x double crochet into the same space, chain 2, 2x double crochet into the same space (Pic 6)
- (2x double crochet into the next space (next CH-2 SP), chain 2, 2x double crochet into the same space) x 11
- slip stitch into 3rd chain of the starting chain (Pic 7)
- at the end of this round you will have a circle with 12 double shells (double shell = 2x double crochet, chain 2, 2x double crochet) (Pic 8)
- you will notice that we started to create the 12 points of the star in this round
- {72 including the slip stitch}


I will now use abbreviations from R5 onwards so please refer to the list of abbreviations at the beginning of this pattern.
R5 (cream): SL ST into next ST, CH 3, 2x DC into FSP, CH 2, 2x DC into SSP, 1x DC in next ST (watch out for this stitch because it is often hidden under the double crochet stitches you made into the space and can be easily missed), skip 2 STs, (1x DC in next ST, 2x DC into NSP, CH 2, 2x DC into SSP, 1x DC in next ST, skip 2 STs) x 11, SL ST into 3rd CH of STR CH {96 incl SL ST}
R6 (cream): SL ST into next ST, CH 3, 1x DC in next ST, 2x DC into FSP, CH 2, 2x DC into SSP, 1x DC in next 2 STs, skip 2 STs, (1x DC in next 2 STs, 2x DC into NSP, CH 2, 2x DC into SSP, 1x DC in next 2 STs, skip 2 STs) x 11, SL ST into 3rd CH of STR CH {120 incl SL ST}
You may experience curling of the blanket at this stage but don’t worry, this will be fixed in the next round.
