Free Crochet Scarf with Pockets Pattern & Video Tutorial

If you love a cosy scarf that’s as practical as it is pretty, you’re going to love this free crochet scarf with pockets pattern! Made using the beautifully textured Lemon Peel stitch, it’s beginner-friendly, completely reversible and finished with big pockets and a stylish fringe.

This crochet pocket scarf pattern is easy to make and perfect for wrapping yourself up on chilly days. And if you fancy something a little wider, you can easily turn it into a crochet shawl with pockets too – just make the scarf wider and you’ll have a perfect pocket shawl to throw around your shoulders.

Once you get into the rhythm of the Lemon Peel stitch, this crochet pocket scarf becomes a lovely relaxing project to work on. Because it’s a nice long scarf, it does take a little time to make, but the repetitive stitch pattern makes it perfect for working on while relaxing at the end of the day or whenever you have a bit of quiet time – just a few rows here and there soon add up!

Crochet Scarf with Pockets Pattern: Before You Get Started

Pattern Notes

Skill level: Beginner crochet skills and knowledge – only basic stitches needed – slip stitches, single crochet stitches and double crochet stitches

Terminology: US crochet terminology

Gauge (4″ x 4″): 7 clusters (cluster = SC in one ST and DC into the following ST) x 12 rows

Sizing

You can easily customise the size of the scarf by chaining more or less stitches in the foundation chain or by crocheting more or less rows. The number of chains effects the width of the scarf. And the number of rows determines the length of the scarf.

Yarn Requirements

Type of Yarn:

I recommend using 100% acrylic yarn or an acrylic blend. Both options are soft, warm and budget-friendly, so you can create a cosy scarf without spending a fortune on yarn. I recommend using Medium Worsted weight yarn #4 = Aran weight yarn.

Crochet Scarf with Pockets Pattern: Step by Step Instructions

Construction

The pocket scarf is crocheted flat in rows, forming one long rectangular piece.

Each pocket is made separately, working from the bottom upwards, before being sewn to the ends of the scarf.

Finally, fringe is attached evenly along both ends for the perfect finishing touch.

The scarf is worked in the Lemon Peel stitch, which creates a beautifully textured, fully reversible fabric that’s soft, cosy and ideal for scarves.

Since it only uses basic crochet stitches, it’s a great one row repeat stitch pattern for beginners to learn.

Written Pattern – Scarf

FCH: Chain 33 loosely – chain more for a wider scarf or less for a narrower one. But always chain an odd number of chains.

R1: SC into each CH across (into back bump only – Pic 1) starting from the 2nd CH from the hook, CH1 and TO {32 excl CH1 at the end}

R3 – R250: Repeat row R2 for row R3 till R250 – you should finish R250 in the opposite corner from your starting tail {32 excl CH1 at the end} – Pic 6 shows what two rows of Lemon Peel stitch clusters look like

For a longer scarf – continue to crochet more rows but make sure that you finish in the opposite corner from your starting tail.

For a shorter scarf – crochet less rows but make sure that you finish in the opposite corner from your starting tail.

Last row: SC into each ST across the row and FO {32}

Weave both yarn ends in.

Written Pattern – Pocket

FCH: Chain 25 loosely – chain more for a wider pocket or less for a smaller one. But always chain an odd number of chains.

R1: SC into each CH across (into back bump only) starting from the 2nd CH from the hook, CH1 and TO {24 excl CH1 at the end}

R3 – R22: Repeat row R2 for row R3 till R22 – you should finish R22 in the opposite corner from your starting tail.

R23: SC into each ST across the row very loosely and do not CH1 {24}

R24: SL ST into back bump of each ST across the row {24} – this creates a firmer edging along the top of the pocket, helping it keep its shape and preventing it from stretching with use

Tip: if you struggle inserting your hook into the back bump, use a smaller hook instead

Do not FO, cut a long tail for sewing the pocket to the scarf (about 1m = 40″) and pull the yarn tail out of the working loop.

Weave the starting tail in.

Sewing on the Pockets

Step 1: Thread your yarn needle with the long yarn tail left after finishing the pocket.

Step 2: Bring the needle up through the corner stitch next to the yarn tail. This creates a neater finish.

Step 3: Pin the pocket on the scarf with the right side facing up. Centre it evenly, leaving approximately 2″/5cm between the bottom of the pocket and the bottom edge of the scarf.

Step 4: Sew the pocket to the scarf, working one stitch at a time around one side first, then the bottom edge and finally the other side.

Step 5: Once you’ve finished sewing, weave in the yarn end securely on the wrong side of the scarf.

Adding the Fringe to Your Crochet Scarf

Step 1: Cut even strands of yarn to create the fringe. The easiest way to do this is to cut a piece of cardboard about 9″/ 23cm long. Wrap your yarn around the cardboard 64 times, then cut across the top edge of the cardboard with scissors to create your fringe strands.

Step 2: Use 2 strands of yarn for every stitch of the 32 stitches across both ends of the scarf

Step 3: Insert your crochet hook through a stitch along the bottom edge of the scarf. Fold 2 strands of yarn in half, creating a loop, and pull the folded end through the stitch with your hook.

Step 4: Pull the loose ends of the yarn through the loop and tighten to secure the fringe in place.

Step 5: Continue adding fringe to each stitch across the bottom edge of the scarf, then repeat on the opposite end of the scarf.

Step 6: Once all the fringe has been attached, straighten the strands and trim them to your desired length, making sure the ends are even. I cut mine 6″/15cm long.
