Crochet Mug Cozy Free Pattern: Before You Get Started
Pattern Notes
Skill level: Beginner crochet skills and knowledge
Finished size: Standard size mug
- height: 8cm (3.25″)
- length without the loops: 23cm (9″)
Terminology: US crochet terminology
Gauge (2″ x 2″): 5 clusters (cluster = SC and DC into the same ST, skip next ST) x 9 rows
Sizing
You can easily customize the size of your crochet cozy to fit any mug. The length of the foundation chain affects the height of the cozy, while the number of rows you crochet will determine its length.
When making your foundation chain, make it slightly longer than the height of the mug handle, leaving extra 3 chains on each side of the handle.
For the length of the cozy, I recommend making the cozy about 2.5 cm (1″) shorter than the circumference of your mug so it stretches slightly. This helps it fit snugly and prevents it from slipping off.
Yarn Requirements
What type of yarn works the best for making a cup cozy:
I recommend 100% cotton yarn as it’s easier to wash and keeps the shape well. Acrylic yarn tends to stretch a lot and tends to lump after multiple washes.
I recommend using Light Worsted #3 = DK or Medium #4 = Worsted weight yarn for extra thickness.
I used 4 different colors for this free crochet mug pattern:
- Light Worsted #3 = DK
- 100% cotton yarn
- It’s 100% Pure DK Cotton by James C. Brett – color cream (IC09), spring green (IC42), blush (IC25), Bougainvillea (IC32)
- yardage per one mug cozy: 25g = 54m (59 yards)

Crochet Mug Cozy Free Pattern: Step by Step Instructions
Construction
You will crochet the cozy flat in rows until you have reached the desired length for the circumference of your mug.
You will be using the Suzette stitch, which is a one row repeat pattern. It creates a lovely modern texture and is reversible. This is an ideal stitch to learn for beginners as it only uses basic crochet stitches.
The loops for the buttons are crocheted right at the end before completing your work.
Once your cozy is finished, you can sew on the buttons and you are done! 🙂
Video Tutorial
If you’d like a little extra guidance, I’ve created a full step-by-step video tutorial to walk you through this crochet mug cozy pattern from start to finish. You can follow along at your own pace and see each part of the process in detail.

Written Pattern
FCH (4mm crochet hook or G/6):
Chain 16 for a standard mug size or follow the instructions in the ‘Sizing’ section of this pattern. But always chain even number of stitches.
Before you create the chain, leave a longer starting tail as you will need it for sewing the buttons on.
R1 (4mm crochet hook or G/6):
SL ST into each CH across (into back bump only) starting from the 2nd CH from the hook, CH1 and TO {15 or one less than the number of chains in your FCH – excl CH1 at the end}
R2 (3mm crochet hook or C/2):
– SC into 2nd CH from the hook, i.e. the first ST of the row, DC into the same ST, skip one ST
– SC into next ST, DC into the same ST, skip one ST
– SC into next ST, DC into the same ST, skip one ST
– crochet across the row taking turns between SC & DC into the same ST and skipping the next stitch
– SC in the last ST at the end of the row
– CH1 and TO {15 or one less than the number of chains in your FCH – excl CH1 at the end}
R3 onwards (3mm crochet hook or C/2):
Repeat row R2 until you reach the desired length of your cozy to fit the size of your mug – refer to the ‘Sizing’ section of this pattern.
For a standard mug size, crochet R3 till about R40 before you continue with the last row.

Last row (3mm crochet hook or C/2):
You will crochet the 3 loops for the buttons in this round. If you get stuck, you can watch my step by step video tutorial for extra help.
– SL ST into 2nd CH from the hook, i.e. the 1st ST of the row
– SL ST into next ST and CH 16x to create the first button loop (customize the length of the loop by crocheting more or fewer chains) – Pic 1
– SL ST into the same ST the chain is coming from, i.e. the same ST you slip stitched into before you started the loop chain – Pic 2 & 3
– SL ST into next 5 STs or until you reach the middle of your row
– SL ST into the next ST which should be the middle ST in the row, CH 16x and SL ST into the same ST the chain is coming from – Pic 4
– SL ST into next 5 STs or until you have only 2 unworked STs left in the row
– SL ST into next ST, CH 16x and SL ST into the same ST the chain is coming from – Pic 5
– SC into the last ST – Pic 6
– FO and weave the yarn tail in
You can now sew the buttons onto the other end of the cozy using the starting tail. Attach one button to each corner and one in the middle. And you are done! 🙂
I hope you enjoyed this crochet mug cozy free pattern! It’s such an easy and quick crochet project and a fun way to practice basic stitches while making something useful, and it also turns into a sweet handmade gift that’s perfect for brightening someone’s day.
