Sizing
The pattern is available in 6 different head sizes – preemie, newborn, 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months and 1-3 year old.
How to find the right size:
- measure your baby’s head circumference first (make sure to wrap the tape measure around the middle of the ears too)
- then find the beanie size that fits the measurement of the head – the hat circumference will be smaller than the head circumference to allow for stretching
- the length of the beanie is easily customisable – try the beanie on before you start crocheting the hem and adjust the length by reducing or increasing the number of HDC rounds keeping in mind you will still have to add the hem
Preemie size:
Head circumference: 12″
Hat circumference: 11″
Hat length: 4.25″
Newborn size:
Head circumference: 13″
Hat circumference: 12″
Hat length: 4.75″
0-3 months size:
Head circumference: 14.5″
Hat circumference: 13.5″
Hat length: 5.5″
3-6 months size:
Head circumference: 15.5″
Hat circumference: 14.5″
Hat length: 5.75″
6-12 months size:
Head circumference: 16.5″
Hat circumference: 15.5″
Hat length: 6.5″
Toddler size – 1 to 3 years:
Head circumference: 17.75″
Hat circumference: 16.75″
Hat length: 6.75″
Yarn requirements
I recommend using Worsted weight yarn #4 = Aran for the sizing to fit. If you use different yarn weight you will need to adjust the sizing or use the pattern for a younger/older child as per the sizing information.
This pattern will work with 100% acrylic yarn, 100% cotton yarn or a blend of acrylic and cotton.
I used:
– Worsted weight yarn #4 = Aran
– 100% acrylic yarn
– Universal Yarn Uptown Worsted
– yardage for each size:
- preemie: 17g / 31yds (28.5m)
- newborn: 22g / 40yds (36.5m)
- 0 to 3 months: 27g / 49yds (45m)
- 3 to 6 months: 37g / 67yds (61.5m)
- 6 to 12 months: 43g / 77.5yds (71m)
- 1 to 3 year old: 50g / 90yds (82.5m)

Baby Bear Beanie Crochet Pattern – Step by Step Instructions
Construction
Construction – beanie:
- the beanie is worked in a round from the top down using half double crochet stitches
- you will work in continuous rounds without slip stitching to connect the rounds – this way you will avoid having a visible seam
- the hem is worked in back bumps/third loop using single crochet stitches
- you will only need to sew on the ears
Construction – ears:
- the ears are worked in a round from the top of the ear down using single crochet stitches
- you will work in continuous rounds without slip stitching to connect the rounds again
Tip: use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round otherwise it is very easy to get lost in the count

FO and leave a long tail for sewing – about 14″ (35cm) long
Fold the ears flat and sew them onto the hat between R3 and R8 of the head making sure they are symetrical.
How to Sew the Ears on
- pin the first ear to the hat
- thread your yarn needle with the long tail
- sew the ear on while going through a stitch on the back of the ear and the corresponding stitch on the front of the ear and then through the hat (Pic 6), repeat until the whole ear is attached
- you will notice the ear will naturally curve so follow the curve when sewing the hat on
- try the hat on first before weaving the yarn tail in – just in case you need to adjust the placement
- pin the second ear to the hat making sure the ears are symetrical and sew it to the hat following the same steps
- try the hat on before weaving the yarn tails in
And that’s it, your baby bear beanie is completed (Pic 7 & 8)! 🙂 And the ears should be nice and curved just like teddy bear ears…how cute! 🙂
