Sizing
You can easily customise the size of the crochet kitchen towel holder by chaining more or less stitches in the foundation chain or by crocheting more or less rows
The number of chains effects the width of the towel holder. And the number of rows determines the length of it.
Yarn Requirements
What type of yarn works the best for making a crochet dish towel holder:
I recommend 100% cotton yarn as it’s easier to wash and keeps the shape well. Acrylic yarn tends to stretch a lot and tends to lump after multiple washes.
I recommend using Light Worsted #3 = DK or Medium #4 = Worsted weight yarn for extra thickness.
I used 4 different colors for this free crochet towel holder pattern:
- Light Worsted #3 = DK
- 100% cotton yarn
- It’s 100% Pure DK Cotton by James C. Brett – color cream (IC09), spring green (IC42), blush (IC25), Bougainvillea (IC32)
- yardage per one towel holder: 10g = 21.5m (23.4 yards)
Yarn Substitutes
US Suppliers

- 100% cotton worsted – Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton Worsted

Crochet Towel Holder Free Pattern: Step by Step Instructions
Construction
First, you will crochet the main body of the towel holder flat in rows until you have achieved the desired size.
You will be using the Suzette stitch, which is a one row repeat pattern. It creates a lovely modern texture and is reversible. This is an ideal stitch to learn for beginners as it only uses basic crochet stitches.
The wooden rings are crocheted on using single crochet so there is no need for extra sewing. But you can of course sew them on instead if you find it easier.
Video Tutorial
If you’d like a little extra guidance, I’ve created a full step-by-step video tutorial to walk you through this crochet towel holder pattern from start to finish. You can follow along at your own pace and see each part of the process in detail.

Written Pattern
FCH (4mm crochet hook or G/6):
Chain 12 – chain more for a wider towel holder or less for a smaller one. But always chain even number of stitches. Before you create the chain, leave a starting tail of at least 150cm (59″) as you will need it for attaching one of the wooden rings to the holder.
R1 (4mm crochet hook or G/6):
SL ST into each CH across (into back bump only) starting from the 2nd CH from the hook, CH1 and TO {11 excl CH1 at the end}
R2 (3mm crochet hook or C/2):
– SC into 2nd CH from the hook, i.e. the 1st ST of the row, DC into the same ST, skip one ST
– SC into next ST, DC into the same ST, skip one ST
– SC into next ST, DC into the same ST, skip one ST
– crochet across the row taking turns between SC & DC into the same ST and skipping the following ST
– SC in the last ST of the row
– CH1 and TO {11 excl CH1 at the end}
R3 – R32 (3mm crochet hook or C/2):
Repeat row R2 for R3 till R32 – you should finish R32 in the opposite corner from your starting tail.

R33 (4mm crochet hook or G/6):
You will attach the wooden ring to the towel holder in this row using SC. For extra help, watch my step by step video tutorial.
– insert your hook into 2nd CH from the hook, i.e. the first stitch of the row
– hold the ring behind your work with the top edge of the ring visible (Pic 1)
– insert your hook into the centre of the ring, yarn over from behind of the ring (Pic 2), pull the yarn through the centre of the ring and then through the stitch – you’ll have two loops left on the hook (Pic 3)
– yarn over in front of the ring (Pic 4) and pull the yarn through the two loops on the hook to complete the SC stitch (Pic 5)
– repeat across the row and FO (Pic 6), push the yarn loops on the ring close to each other and weave the yarn tail in
– repeat the above steps to attach the second ring to the other end of the holder using the starting tail
And you’re done! 🙂 I hope you enjoyed this free crochet towel holder pattern! It’s a quick and easy crochet project that’s perfect for practising basic crochet stitches while creating something practical. It also makes a thoughtful handmade gift that’s sure to brighten someone’s day.
